Powered by OMNIVISION’s OVM6946 Compact Camera Module, the Neoscope FDA-Approved Endoscope Offers Medical Device Manufacturers a Turnkey Solution
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — JUNE 13, 2017— OMNIVISION Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced it has engaged with Neoscope, Inc., a manufacturer of endoscopic devices, to design and develop a fully certified, end-to-end, single-use endoscope solution. By integrating OMNIVISION’s OVM6946 compact wafer-level camera module with Neoscope’s endoscope design, Neocope will provide medical device manufacturers with a cost-effective, FDA-approved product that dramatically reduces time-to-market.
Industry reports have identified cross-contamination due to inadequate sterilization of reusable endoscopic devices as one of today’s top health hazards within the medical industry. To combat this issue, the medical community is transitioning from reusable to single-use endoscopes. Other added benefits of single-use instruments include reduced downtime and lower cost of surgery, as the need for repairs, pre-procedure testing, and sterilization are eliminated. These reports also suggest that the transition to single-use endoscopes is prompting an increase in demand for minimally invasive surgeries.
“By combining our expertise in developing small image sensors and wafer level optics with endoscope development, OMNIVISION and Neoscope are offering fully functional, turnkey single-use endoscopic solutions for ENT, urology, gynecological diagnostic and therapeutic applications,” said Tehzeeb Gunja, senior product marketing and business development manager at OMNIVISION. “These solutions offer medical device manufacturers a customizable and low risk path to integrate, brand and distribute endoscopic solutions without incurring significant development time and cost.”
“Up until now, due to the high cost of optical fibers and the large size of image sensors, manufacturing a small outer diameter, high-resolution, cost-effective, single-use endoscope was simply not feasible,” said Ashvin Desai, president of Neoscope. “By incorporating wafer level optics, requiring minimal tuning, OMNIVISION’s OVM6946 helps simplify development cycles and streamline manufacturing processes, further contributing to the economically viability of a high performance single-use endoscope.”
Utilizing OMNIVISION’s market-proven CameraCubeChip® technology, the OVM6946 is a wafer-level module that offers a compact size, short focus distance, large focusing range and wide field-of-view. The OVM6946 has been tested for sterilization and bio-compatibility. These key features make it an ideal candidate for single-use endoscopes and catheters.
Delivered in sterile packaging, Neoscope’s ready-to-use endoscope integrates OMNIVISION’s OVM6946 with data transmission wires, a rigid or flexible articulating handle, LED illumination, and USB connection to a video processor unit. The included camera control unit can capture, process, record and store still and video images for real-time or later review. By comparison, traditional reusable devices require additional wiring, third-party recording, video and light processors, and display monitors, which take up considerable space in the operating room and require intensive and costly cleaning, sterilization and preparation between procedures.
OMNIVISION will be showcasing this product at booth 2162 during MD&M East, June 13-15, 2017.
