Ultra-Low-Power OV798 Video Processor Allows Ring’s Battery-Operated IoT Security and Doorbell Solutions to Be Placed Virtually Anywhere

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — July 31, 2017 — OMNIVISION Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging and video processor solutions, and Ring, provider of wireless home security products including the latest Video Doorbell 2 and Spotlight Camera, announced the next phase in an ongoing relationship that began with Ring’s first-generation video doorbell. OMNIVISION’s OV4686 RGB‑Ir image sensor and OV798 video processor make Ring’s new dual-power source (hard-wired and battery-powered) internet of things (IoT) home security products possible. As a result, consumers can now record, stream and monitor every corner of their home in high-quality 1080p HD video using an app on a smartphone or tablet.

In 2015, there were a staggering 1.5M reported burglaries in the U.S., 60% of which were residential, according to the FBI. In 70% of these instances, thieves gained access through the front door. Consequently, consumers have become more vigilant about securing their homes, and clamor for IoT-enabled home security cameras that help provide peace of mind by allowing for remote home monitoring, according to industry reports.

“At Ring, our mission is to reduce crime in neighborhoods by providing easy-to-install, app-based video home-monitoring systems that allow homeowners to identify intruders and either alert the authorities or deter the intruders entirely by answering the door remotely,” said Jamie Siminoff, founder and CEO of Ring. “OMNIVISION has been our trusted source for best-in-class image-sensor and image-processing technologies since our first-generation video doorbell. Together, we have once again revolutionized the home security camera industry with our next generation of wireless, battery-powered home security camera devices.”

“Traditional home security camera systems involved hard-wiring due to the power requirements of the image sensor and video processor. By leveraging OMNIVISION’s ultra-low-power and instant boot-up OV798 video processor, Ring’s home security solutions can now operate untethered and be placed virtually anywhere,” said Sam Huang, vice president of design engineering at OMNIVISION.

The OV4686 is a highly sensitive image sensor, built on OMNIVISION’s 2‑micron OmniBSI™‑2 pixel architecture and second-generation RGB-Ir color filter pattern. This combination allows the OV4686 to capture high-quality day- and night-mode images and video while eliminating the need for a mechanical filter. Designed to record color-accurate scene reproduction in challenging lighting environments, the OV4686 delivers full-resolution 1080p HD images and video at 120 frames per second.

The low-power, fast-wake-up OV798 video processor has an embedded advanced image signal processor that supports 1080p full HD video, and supports RGB‑Ir and high dynamic range (HDR) image sensors. It features a sophisticated boot-up mechanism that wakes it up quickly and triggers immediate video recording.
