OMNIVISION Technologies Single-Chip CMOS Image Sensors (“Camera-on-a-Chip”) Open New NTSC/PAL Applications for Manufacturers
Oct 19, 1998

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — October 19, 1998 — OMNIVISION Technologies, Inc. today announced the introduction of OV7500 (color) and OV7000 (B&W) Series CMOS image sensor devices (“Camera-on-a-Chip”) designed for NTSC/PAL composite video applications.

The OV7500 Series and OV7000 Series are single-chip analog camera devices with two on-chip composite video encoders that output a high-quality interlaced image suitable for closed-circuit television (CCTV). The NTSC (60 Hz) encoder outputs a 508 x 492 pixel image (250K) at 30 frames per second. The PAL (50 Hz) encoder outputs a 628 x 582 pixel image (365K) at 25 frames per second. A 5‑volt DC power supply and a timing source are all that are required to produce a standard NTSC or PAL composite video signal ready to plug into a standard television or video recorder.

OMNIVISION’s new single-chip analog imaging devices are ideally suited for a wide range of applications, including CCTV systems, consumer products, medical instruments, computer input, and security and surveillance systems, among others. CMOS image sensors have the inherent advantages of small size, light weight, low power consumption, high reliability and low cost. OMNIVISION’s proprietary technology results in CMOS image sensors that have a wide dynamic range with anti-blooming and virtually no smear.

The OV7500 and OV7000 Series products are designed to simplify the implementation of imaging applications. Numerous functions have been integrated on-chip and include Automatic Gain Control (AGC), Automatic Exposure Control (AEC), Automatic White Balance (AWB), Gamma Correction, Back Light Compensation and Automatic Black Level Calibration. The OV7500 Series also includes all color matrix processing on‑chip. On‑chip functions are managed through the programmable I2C bus interface.

“These CMOS image sensors provide some of the highest quality image capture capability of any NTSC/PAL devices and are a great solution for mass-market applications, such as PC computers, PDAs and other hand-held devices, consumer products, security & surveillance and machine vision,” said Bob Stroh, VP Sales and Marketing.

The OV7500 Series is available for $19.00 in quantities of 10,000; the OV7000 Series is priced at $17.00 in quantities of 10,000.
