OV9281 and OV9282 OmniPixel®3-GS Sensors Deliver Excellent Near-Infrared Quantum Efficiency with Increased Accuracy for Gesture and Feature Detection

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — January 6, 2017 — OMNIVISION Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) the introduction of the OV9281 and OV9282 global shutter image sensors. Built on OMNIVISION’s OmniPixel®3-GS technology, the OV9281 and OV9282 feature high-speed global shutter pixel technology with best-in-class near-infrared (NIR) quantum efficiency (QE) to meet the high-resolution and low-latency requirements of today’s consumer and industrial computer vision applications, such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), collision avoidance in drones, bar code scanning and factory automation. Both sensors are also designed for the convenient 1/4‑inch module size.

According to recent market forecasts from the International Data Corporation (IDC), AR and VR hardware shipments are expected to reach 76 million units worldwide, with a projected CAGR of 108 percent over the next four years. Many of these devices require high-resolution global shutter image-sensing solutions to enable gesture detection and room scanning functionality.

“Today’s tech-savvy consumers are looking for the best VR and AR user experience from their devices, which in turn requires the latest computer vision algorithms. The 1‑megapixel OV9281 and OV9282 are key enablers to these algorithms, as they are the first 1/4‑inch global shutter sensors on the market that can capture 720p resolution at 120 frames per second (fps) with excellent NIR QE,” said Kalairaja Chinnaveerappan, senior product marketing manager at OMNIVISION. “The OV9281 and OV9282 enable low latency, high accuracy computer vision algorithms for head-mounted devices, as well as precise collision detection algorithms for drones.”

The OV9281 and OV9282 are built on OMNIVISION’s OmniPixel®3-GS global shutter pixel architecture, which is well known for delivering exceptional image quality and advanced feature sets in a compact size. The global shutter technology can simultaneously shutter all pixels in an image to preserve true scene capture, thus eliminating all artifacts from rolling shutter technologies. This makes the OV9281 and OV9282 particularly well-suited to support the complex algorithms used in computer vision applications.

Special features of the OV9281 and OV9282 include region of interest (ROI) selection and context switching. This allows some of the camera settings to change dynamically, as fast as alternating frames. The sensors are available in both narrow and wide chief ray angle (CRA) formats.

Additional features of the OV9281 and OV9282 include:

  • 1280 x 800 resolution at 120 fps
  • 640 x 480 resolution at 180 fps
  • 2‑lane MIPI and DVP output
  • Support for frame synchronization
  • Dynamic defective pixel correction

The OV9281 has a chief ray angle (CRA) of 9 degrees and comes in a chip scale package (CSP). The OV9282 features a CRA of 27 degrees and is available in a reconstructed wafer (RW) format. Both sensors are currently available in volume production.
