TheiaCel™ Technology
A New Era for Single-Exposure HDR
TheiaCel™ Technology
OMNIVISION’s new TheiaCel™ family of easy-to-implement solutions addresses high dynamic range performance challenges in a variety of applications.
Today’s high dynamic range (HDR) imaging has entered an era in which existing solutions cannot fully address some key industry requirements. OMNIVISION answers the challenge with its new TheiaCel™ Technology.
TheiaCel™ harnesses the capabilities of lateral overflow integration capacitor (LOFIC) technology, together with OMNIVISION’s proprietary HDR technology, to enable superior image quality regardless of lighting conditions. The first application of TheiaCel™ Technology is focused on substantially pushing the low-light performance and eliminating LED flicker in 2.1 µm pixel-generation automotive applications, in which LOFIC is combined with DCG™ HDR Technology.

TheiaCel™ Technology:
A New Era for Single-Exposure HDR
DCG™ HDR Technology
OMNIVISION’s DCG™ HDR Technology can extend dynamic range in a single exposure to reproduce motion-artifact-free and ultra low-noise images in challenging lighting conditions. In DCG™ pixels, photoelectrons from a photodiode are read out twice in different gains: low-conversion gain (LCG) for high light and high-conversion gain (HCG) to capture clear images in low light. In this way, DCG™ HDR Technology effectively extends the dynamic range to the lower light side.
LOFIC Technology
LOFIC technology is key to extending dynamic range to very bright light conditions with storing more photoelectrons by collecting overflow electrons in the large capacitor within each pixel. By harnessing LOFIC’s unique capabilities, single-exposure HDR imaging can be effectively enhanced, keeping the photocharge generated from the same photodiode as the low light channel.
As the leading provider of CMOS image sensors, OMNIVISION has applied the benefits of LOFIC with its DCG™ HDR Technology to solve HDR limitations, maintaining good linearity and allowing for superior image quality across an exceptionally wide range of lighting conditions and the full automotive temperature range.
OMNIVISION intends to apply TheiaCel™ Technology to additional industry applications in the future.
